Port Barton from Puerto Princesa: day trip or overnight?
Go, and sleep there. Port Barton is ₱600 and about 3 hours 30 by SBE van, six departures a day, and it is the only far trip from this city that functions as a day at all. The packaged version runs from $83 at 4.5★ across 85 reviews and takes about 15 hours door to door, with a hotel pickup around 05:00 and about 4 hours' drive each way. For snorkellers it beats Honda Bay outright: real wild green turtles at Turtle Spot and the best easy coral in the region at Twin Reef. Island hopping booked in the village itself is ₱1,200–1,500.
Is Port Barton for you?
The anti-El Nido, with the caveats attached
Port Barton is a sand street, a bay, a handful of guesthouses and a boat association. That is the appeal and it is also the limitation, and the people who like it most say both things in the same breath.
It sits in San Vicente municipality, off the North Palawan Highway on a spur that was the historically rough part of the journey. The last 22 km or so is now paved — still narrow and twisty, but no longer the reason people arrived rattled. Vans terminate at the Port Barton terminal in Brgy. San Pedro and the village is small enough to walk end to end.
The reason to come is the water. Turtle Spot has genuine wild green turtles grazing seagrass, not a pen and not a feeding station. Twin Reef is the best easy coral in this part of Palawan — blogs describe some of Palawan's healthiest accessible reefs and, unusually, the review corpus agrees. There is an Exotic or Maxima Island stop, and Port Barton has its own Starfish Island, unrelated to the one in Honda Bay.
The honest caveats come from a blogger who updated her verdict in January 2026 and still landed on yes, one hundred per cent: it is way more laid-back and less touristy than El Nido, and also there is not a ton to do, not much when it rains, and some places are weirdly expensive for what they are. Electricity and connectivity are patchy by city standards; several operators advertise Starlink, which tells you what the alternative is.
Be honest with yourself about the snorkelling: Honda Bay rates 4.0 on TripAdvisor against the Underground River's 4.4, and the recurring complaint is poor visibility and thin coral. If El Nido, Coron or Port Barton are on your itinerary, Honda Bay will be the worst snorkelling of your trip. If they are not, it is a pleasant, shallow, kid-proof day out.

The packaged day against doing it yourself with a night
The comparison people never run, because the day trip looks cheaper until you notice what it leaves out.
Two days, one of them a full unhurried boat day that leaves around 09:00 rather than after a drive of three to four hours. You wake up in the village, you see the sunset, and you can carry on to El Nido in the morning instead of driving back the way you came.
About ₱4,800 for transfers both ways, the boat, the gear and lunch, coordinated so you do nothing but be awake at 05:00. 4.5★ from 85 reviews, and roughly 15 hours door to door, about 8 of them in the van.

Cash, and the fees nobody mentions
Draw cash in the city. Tours, tricycles, markets and most small restaurants take cash. Foreign cards usually pay a fee per withdrawal, so take out larger amounts less often, and decline the machine's offer to charge you in your own currency. Sabang has few or no machines, so arrive with what you need for your stay.
Every quoted price here is missing a fee, and the fee is cash. The ₱150 city environmental fee is collected separately even on tours that say all-inclusive. Keep the receipt; sources disagree on how long it stays valid and which sites it covers, so ask when you pay. Cheap local island tours often add small per-island, mask and shoe charges, so compare what a listing includes rather than its headline price.
Port Barton in particular is a place to arrive funded. It is a village with limited banking, the boat association is paid in cash on the sand, and the guesthouses at the cheaper end do not take cards. Draw what you need in the city before the 06:00 van, and remember that Puerto Princesa's single-use plastics ban means nobody will hand you a bag for any of it.
