Day trip from Puerto Princesa to El Nido: possible, not worth it

Three things sold as day trips from Puerto Princesa are not day trips. El Nido is 5–6 hours each way. San Vicente's Long Beach is 3–4 hours each way on a bus timetable that makes same-day return absurd. Balabac is 8–12 hours each way — a van to Buliluyan Port, then a boat. Those turquoise sandbar photographs cost you four days, not one.

Nobody types this because they are lazy. They type it because they have booked three nights in Puerto Princesa, seen the lagoon photographs, worked out that El Nido is on the same island, and assumed the distance is a couple of hours. It is not: it is about 260 km and five and a half hours in a shuttle van, and the stretch north of Taytay is the winding part that makes people ill.

Run the tour day as it is listed. Pickup around 04:00, about five hours north, an island-hopping trip on Bacuit Bay, then about five hours back; a 20-hour day that starts at 04:00 ends around midnight. Doing it yourself is no better: the first Lexxus van leaves at 07:00 and arrives about 12:30, and the last one back leaves El Nido at 18:00, arriving about 23:30. That is ₱1,300 in seats for about five and a half hours in El Nido, with no time for a full boat tour.

El Nido is spectacular on the water. It does not reward a day spent mostly in a van.

GetYourGuide lists a Puerto Princesa day trip to El Nido with island hopping. Naming it and explaining it is more useful than pretending it does not exist.

What you are buying is the logistics: a hotel pickup around 04:00, the long drive both ways, and an island-hopping tour at the other end that the listing says takes in the Big and Secret lagoons, sold as one item so that nothing has to be arranged by you in the dark. On 5 October 2026 it was listed from $332 for up to two people, with a shared or private option, free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead, and a rating of 3.5/5 from 35 reviews. If weather stops the boats once you are in El Nido, the listing offers another activity or a refund.

The reviews say what you would expect. People praise the islands and complain about the van; one reviewer describes twelve people in the shared van and calls it uncomfortable. The listing itself warns of more than 10 hours of driving.

It is the right purchase in exactly three situations: you have one immovable day in Palawan and El Nido is non-negotiable; you are on a work trip with a fixed return flight; or you are testing whether you want to come back properly. In every other case the same money buys a better day somewhere closer, or two nights somewhere better.

Physically yes. Practically no, and forum regulars say so bluntly. That day is an early pickup, about two hours to Sabang, the wharf queue, the boat into the cave, two hours back, then 5 hours 30 north arriving well after dark. Call it fifteen hours with no slack anywhere in it, and one Coast Guard suspension at Sabang collapses the whole thing.

The usual fix is to stop trying to do it in a day. Sleep in Sabang, take the river early, then carry on north without backtracking through the city. The Sabang overnight page is honest about what that gamble is worth.

And if you are chaining anything onto a flight, never count on a domestic flight to make a same-day international connection. Leave a night between them.
