Puerto Princesa cruise port: what fits in eight hours

Cruise passengers ask one question, and the answer is no
The gap between what passengers hope to fit into a port day here and what is actually possible is wide, and it is almost entirely about one attraction.
Puerto Princesa is a regular port of call: the Philippine Ports Authority lists it among the ports that have consistently welcomed cruise ships, and cruise passenger arrivals across the Philippines rose to 226,247 in 2025 from 150,903 in 2024. Calls here are day calls, so check your own ship's times and plan against the all-aboard, not the arrival.
What cruise passengers ask on the forums is nearly always the same thing — can we do the Underground River — and the answer they get from the regulars is no. Docking at 08:00, then one and a half to two and a half hours of driving each way to Sabang, a wharf queue and a boat, against a 16:00 all-aboard, is not a plan. The regulars are right.
The second thing passengers ask is where the beach is, and the answer is harder: there is no beach near the city that compares with the north of Palawan. Honda Bay's sandbars are the realistic sea day, and Nagtabon is 45–60 minutes each way with few facilities and real rip currents. Plan for a bay day, not a beach day.
What the ship's excursion is actually selling
The same boat, the same cave and the same buffet can be bought from the ship or from a local operator, and it pays to compare the two.
Compare the cruise line's excursion price with the independent listings further down this page before you choose. Local operators quote ₱2,000–2,500 for the river day with pickup, permit, boat and lunch, and ₱1,500–2,000 for Honda Bay.
The ship's excursion buys one thing an independent booking cannot: the ship waits for its own excursions and does not wait for you. On a tight call that is worth real money — which is exactly why the honest answer is to book a shorter trip independently rather than a cheaper version of a trip that does not fit.

All times are door to door from the port, with a hard 15:00 back-at-the-ship target — never plan to the all-aboard time itself.

The city circuit, 08:00 to 16:00
Alongside, and off the ship
Clear the terminal, and settle your transport before you leave it. Grab rides are not running here yet — on 30 September 2026 the city said Grab's vehicles were still going through the process for its transport service — so tricycles are the system. A chartered tricycle for city touring is ₱600–1,200 for a half day, and shared hops are ₱12–25. Agree the fare before you get in and you will never have a problem.
Plaza Cuartel and the cathedral
Twenty minutes and the most historically weighted stop here. 139 American prisoners of war were burned alive in air-raid shelters on this ground on 14 December 1944; 11 survived, and a survivor's testimony fed into the decision behind the Great Raid at Cabanatuan. Entry is free or a token fee — carry small notes. The blue cathedral beside it is free.
Binuatan Creations
Working handlooms weaving buri and tikog. You can sit at a loom and try it, and what you buy was made in the room. This is the stop that gives a shore day something to take home that is not from a mall — and unlike most souvenir stops on a cruise circuit, it is a genuine workshop.
The crocodile farm
Properly the Palawan Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Center, a government-run breeding and rescue facility rather than a zoo. Entry is free or a small fee — ask at the gate — and the live Google Maps listing has current hours. The baby-crocodile photo op is optional and you can decline it.
Lunch by the water
Badjao Seafront is the daytime option, built out over the water on stilts — dishes ₱125–550, a seafood platter ₱1,150, about ₱500–900 a head, and it is cash only. Be warned that the view beats the food. KaLui at ₱795 for the set for two is the other lunch answer. Check either one's live Google Maps listing for current hours before you set off. The Baywalk grill stalls are an evening thing, so they are not a lunch plan.
The furnace hours, spent indoors
13:00 to 16:00 is the worst of the heat. Robinsons Place Palawan and SM City are free to enter, air-conditioned and have pharmacies — genuinely the right call with children. The Palawan Heritage Center is the better indoor stop if it is open on your call day — check its Google Maps listing for current days and hours.
The Baywalk and last shopping
The seafront promenade is free, walkable and the best photograph of the actual city. Buy cashews, hopia at ₱50–120 or woven work here rather than at the pier. Draw cash if you need it: foreign cards are charged about ₱250 per withdrawal at nearly every bank and machines empty at weekends.
Back at the ship, an hour early
Never plan to the all-aboard time. The port is close to the centre and traffic is not the problem — the problem is a tricycle that does not turn up and no working ride-hailing app to fall back on. If you are one of the passengers who tried the river independently, this is the hour you will not have.
Ship days are exactly when the river sells out
The Underground River is permit-rationed, and the permit — not the bed, not the flight — is what sells out. A visitor entry permit must be secured before you travel to the park; the official notice says no permit, no entry, and warns that turning up in Sabang, or sleeping there, guarantees you nothing. Most visitors let a tour operator hold the permit. Book 1–2 weeks ahead from December to May, and on cruise-call days expect slots to be gone.
This is the part that catches independent bookers. The park is permit-rationed, and reviewers have reported finding the river sold out on the day a cruise ship was in. If you are in port on a ship day and planning to book the river independently, you are competing for permits with the ship's own excursions.
The park's own site does not publish a daily visitor limit, so treat any number you read elsewhere as a guess. The permits themselves are handled by the Underground River booking office at Mendoza Park, downtown — though most visitors let a tour operator hold the permit.
If your call is long enough to attempt the river at all, the sequence is: secure the permit or a tour weeks out, take the earliest possible start, and accept that the ship will not wait for an independent booking. The cruise-day river page works through that decision in full.
