Puerto Princesa vs Coron
These two are barely competitors — they sit at opposite ends of Palawan and at opposite ends of what people want. The formula repeated across 2024–2026 itinerary threads is El Nido 4–6 nights, Coron 2–4 and diving-weighted, Puerto Princesa 0–2 for the river, the food and a buffer night. If your trip is short, this city is the one that loses nights, and honest guides should say so. There is no road between them and no direct flight from this airport — its five routes are Manila, Cebu, Iloilo, Davao and Clark — so any pairing costs you a travel day. If what you actually want is a pool and a glass of wine, the experts steer you out of Palawan entirely.
Which one gets the nights
Coron
The forums treat Coron as the diving half of Palawan, and the night-count reflects it: 2 to 4, more if you are certified, fewer if you are not. It is a separate island at the northern end of the province, reached by sea or air rather than by road, which means pairing it with this city costs a travel day whichever direction you go. Compare Coron hotels ↗Puerto Princesa
The airport end of the province, and the formula gives it 0 to 2 nights. Two if the Underground River is on your list, which is a 7–10 hour day for ₱2,000–2,500. Zero to one if it is not. Both resident experts on a "Puerto Princesa or Bohol?" thread sided against this city for a standalone short trip, and they were right to. Full verdict →
Compare hotels here ↗Neither, if you want pool and wine
Asked by couples wanting a relaxed resort week, the forum regulars do not pick between Palawan towns — they point at Boracay or Bohol instead. One reply, on the 2023 Puerto Princesa versus El Nido thread, put it as bluntly as it can be put: drinking nice cold wine is not what he thinks of when he thinks of the Philippines. If that describes your trip, this whole comparison is the wrong one. Full verdict →
How the three Palawan bases divide up
This is the consensus build, not a ranking. The verdict column is the verdict on giving Puerto Princesa nights against that alternative.
| Base | Nights | What it is for | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| El Nido ~500,000 arrivals a year, against 311,724 in 2019 | 4–6 | Island hopping, four tour routes, the lagoons and karst you flew for. Gets the most nights in every reachable itinerary thread. | SKIP |
| Coron a separate island, reached by sea or air | 2–4 | Diving-weighted. The regulars add nights here for certified divers and trim them for everyone else. | SKIP |
| Puerto Princesa the airport, the hospitals, the food | 0–2 | The Underground River, one very good dinner, and a buffer night around a flight. Nothing else earns a night. | DEPENDS |
| Port Barton the fastest-rising recommendation of 2025–26 | 1–2 | The quiet alternative, 3.5 hours north for ₱600 by SBE van. Slotted in between here and El Nido more often every year. | DEPENDS |
| Bohol or Boracay not in Palawan at all | the whole trip | Where the experts send anyone who wants a resort week rather than an expedition. Both resident experts chose Bohol over this city for a short standalone trip. | SKIP |
"Puerto Princesa or Bohol?" is now itself a live forum thread with 19 replies — travellers benchmark this city against non-Palawan destinations, not just against El Nido. That is a meaningful signal about what this city is competing on, and it is not scenery.
When the answer is neither of them
The most useful thing the forum veterans do is refuse the question when it is the wrong question, and it happens on this comparison more than any other.
Couples asking for a relaxed pool-and-wine week get steered away from all of Palawan — "Boracay and/or Bohol maybe a better fit" is the standing reply from the most prolific destination expert on the forum. Palawan is a province you travel in: 280 km and 5½ hours between here and El Nido, a separate island for Coron, and van transfers that carry a 3.3-star rating across 607 reviews. Nobody arrives at a Palawan itinerary by accident and enjoys it.
The same instinct produced the "Puerto Princesa or Bohol?" thread, and both resident experts sided against this city — "Bohol by some margin", and "Bohol offers a lot more than PP including great beaches". That is the correct answer to that question, and it costs this site nothing to publish it. The city is not competing for your whole holiday. It is competing for two days inside a Palawan trip you were already taking.
A traveller on that thread with two nights total for the trip was told she would be "travelling more than enjoying" — which is the real risk of a three-base Palawan itinerary on a short holiday. If you have under eight nights, pick two bases, not three, and let this city be the one you use rather than the one you stay in.
There is no easy way to pair these two
Every itinerary that includes both pays a travel day, and it is worth knowing that before you draw the map.
This airport flies to five domestic destinations only — Manila with about 179 flights a month, Cebu with about 55, Iloilo 13, Davao 12 and Clark 7 — on Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines. AirAsia cut its Manila route in June 2026. There is no service from here to Coron and none to El Nido, and despite the airport's name there are zero international flights. Anything that looks like a shortcut on a map is not one.
The practical patterns people actually use: fly in here, van 5½ hours north to El Nido for ₱650, continue to Coron by sea, and fly home from there — or the same chain reversed. Detail on the Coron page and the getting-north page. Whichever direction you run it, this city sits at one end and gets one or two nights, not four.
Three things sold as day trips from Puerto Princesa are not day trips. El Nido is 5–6 hours each way. San Vicente's Long Beach is 3–4 hours each way on a bus timetable that makes same-day return absurd. Balabac is 8–12 hours each way — a van to Buliluyan Port, then a boat. Those turquoise sandbar photographs cost you four days, not one.
Where the nights actually go
Two to four nights in Coron, four to six in El Nido, nought to two here. Prices below are live; the local reference for the river day in this city is ₱2,000–2,500.
Coron and Palawan split questions, answered
Is Coron better than Puerto Princesa?
For water and diving, yes, and the night-count says so: the formula repeated across 2024–2026 itinerary threads is Coron 2–4 nights against Puerto Princesa 0–2. This city wins on flights, hospitals, food and cost, which is a different competition.
How should I split Palawan between El Nido, Coron and Puerto Princesa?
El Nido 4–6 nights, Coron 2–4 with divers at the top of that range, and this city 0–2 for the Underground River and a buffer night. On fewer than 8 nights total, drop to two bases rather than three — the transfers eat more of a short trip than people expect.
Can I fly from Puerto Princesa to Coron?
No. This airport serves five domestic routes only — Manila, Cebu, Iloilo, Davao and Clark — on Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines, with AirAsia's Manila route cut in June 2026. Pairing the two means going by sea, usually via El Nido.
Puerto Princesa or Bohol?
Bohol, for a standalone short trip, and both resident experts on the 19-reply forum thread said so — "Bohol by some margin" and "Bohol offers a lot more than PP including great beaches". That the question is asked at all tells you this city is not competing on scenery.
Where should I go in the Philippines for a relaxing resort week?
Not Palawan. The forum regulars point pool-and-wine travellers at Boracay or Bohol instead, and one put it plainly on the 2023 comparison thread. Palawan means 5½-hour vans, boat transfers and a 3.3-star-rated shuttle product — it is a travelling holiday.
Is Puerto Princesa worth 2 nights if I am doing Coron and El Nido?
Only for the Underground River, which is a ₱2,000–2,500 day. With both of those on your itinerary, Honda Bay here will be the worst snorkelling of your trip, and a local says as much — after El Nido island hopping it will be a bore. 2 nights for the cave and the food, or 1 and go.
How many nights do I need for all three Palawan bases?
Nine at the very least, and ten to twelve comfortably: 2 here, 4–6 in El Nido, 2–4 in Coron, plus the travel days between them. A traveller trying to do it in far less was told she would be travelling more than enjoying, which is the standing verdict.
three, if the trip
is under nine nights.
The mistake this comparison exists to prevent is a three-base Palawan itinerary on a short holiday. If you have under nine nights, pick El Nido plus one — either Coron for diving or this city for the Underground River — and give the loser a single buffer night around the flight. Rooms here run ₱800–2,600 at the useful tiers, against El Nido's materially higher bands.
